MCHS girls soccer triumphs over Rifle
The Moffat County High School girls varsity soccer team had one of its best games of the season Thursday in a 5-3 win over Rifle.
Coach Harry Tripp attributed the victory to a new defensive system his team has been practicing over the week.
“We went with a 4-5-1 (formation), and it’s really been paying off,” he said.
Offensively, it was the highest scoring game thus far for MCHS, with senior Kelly Ciesco scoring four goals, the first hat trick of the year for the team, whose record is 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the Western Slope League.
Tripp said the team is finding its balance after a rough start to the season.
“We had a big dry spell with goals, but we’re really starting to come together,” he said.
The Bulldogs travel to Palisade (5-4, 4-2) today for a match-up with a team that defeated them, 6-1, earlier in the month.
“They mixed up our defense last time and got three or four goals off that,” Tripp said. “We won’t be letting that happen this time.”
MCHS baseball hosts Palisade today
While the girls are on the road against Palisade, the MCHS varsity baseball team will meet the same school in a doubleheader at home starting at 11 a.m. today at the Craig Middle School baseball field, 915 Yampa Ave.
After a 7-3 loss to Rangely on Thursday, the Bulldogs stand 3-9 overall, 1-5 in the Western Slope League. 10-2 Palisade is undefeated in Western Slope, boasting a 5-0 record in the league.
Coach Justin Folley said he’s looking forward to playing the league leaders for the first time this season.
“If we compete from the get-go, I know we’ll be just fine,” he said. “Anyone can win any day in the game of baseball.”
