This weekend, a Craig serviceman returns home from the front lines in Afghanistan.
Lance Cpl. Kaleb McCarthy, 21, recently completed his second tour of duty with Fox Company, Second Battalion, in the Fourth Marine Division.
He was stationed in Musa Qala, located in the southeastern Afghan province of Helmand.
He arrived stateside March 27 at Camp Pendleton near Oceanside, Calif., to participate in mandatory readjustment classes.
On Saturday, McCarthy will board a flight bound for Denver International Airport.
His plane is scheduled to arrive at 6:30 p.m. and his family expects him home early Sunday morning.
“He’s finally coming home to see the family,” said Shannon Russell, his older stepsister. “We’re ecstatic to have him home and out of danger.”
McCarthy enlisted in the Marine Corp in August 2008.
His first tour was aboard the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard in waters near Yemen and Kuwait in September 2009.
His anticipated discharge date is Aug. 2 and after two tours, Russell said her stepbrother has plans to end his military service.
“His future plans are to get out of the military, as far as I know,” Russell said. “Eventually, he and his wife (Alexis) will move to Colorado Springs.”
Russell said McCarthy is coming home to “partially” celebrate his 22nd birthday, which is April 25, with family and friends.
Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4265 have planned a welcome home party scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday at the post, 419 E. Victory Way.
Cake and coffee will be served and Russell said the welcome home event is open to the public.
