Kathy Bockelman: CASA seeks volunteers

To the editor:

Sunday is the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Sept. 11 has been designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance to honor those who perished and to rekindle the spirit of unity and compassion that swept our nation after 9/11. Just as that horrific event 10 years ago brought out the best in so many Americans who rushed to others’ rescue, all Americans are asked on this 10th anniversary to reaffirm the strength of our nation with acts of service and charity and by taking the time to volunteer and commit to supporting needy causes for the long-term.

Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children wants to remind everyone that our nation’s children are our future, and caring for them is one of our greatest responsibilities. Every child deserves a nurturing family and a safe environment free from fear, abuse and neglect.

Tragically too many children suffer from physical, emotional, and sexual abuse every day. Every year, more than 13,000 children in Colorado enter foster care. More than 1,600 children die each year from the effects of child abuse nationwide. Child abuse and neglect happen in every community, including Craig. As responsible citizens, we must ask if we are doing all we can to make the world a better place for all children.

CASA continues to seek people who are interested in making a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children. Court Appointed Special Advocates are trained and supervised volunteers, sworn in and appointed by a judge to advocate for abused children. CASA volunteers meet regularly with the children to whom they are assigned, and together with professionals, help assess the educational, developmental, medical and emotional needs of the child. The CASA volunteer is a “child’s voice in court.”

One abused child is one too many. There are no easy answers for the serious issues of child abuse and neglect. CASA wants to encourage community members to join our ongoing effort to keep children safe. The mission of Northwest Rocky Mountain CASA is “to recruit, educate and empower community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the 14th Judicial District to ensure that each and every child is permitted to grow up in a safe and permanent home.”

CASA is a non-profit organization and needs your help to carry out our mission. There are many ways you can help. Call and find out what it takes to become a CASA volunteer. Join our Community Development Committee to help with fundraising. You can, also donate now online at http://www.nwrmcasa.org. CASA will sponsor an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at 439 Breeze St, if you want to find out more about CASA.

As a society, we won’t be given another chance to get it right for this generation of children. To find out how you can become a part of CASA, please contact me at 620-2342 or at nwcasacraig@coloradocasa.org.
