The Little Snake River Valley School’s six-man varsity football team exploded for three touchdowns in the last six minutes of the first quarter of Friday’s opening round of the 1A state playoffs against Hulett, winning easily, 72-13.

The visiting Red Devils were never able to stop the Rattlers, who scored on all of their offensive possessions through the first three quarters.

Senior Daniel Willie scored four rushing touchdowns and also caught a 62-yard touchdown pass to lead LSRV. His 34-yard burst gave the Rattlers an early 7-0 lead.

“I thought we came out and executed well,” LSRV coach Michael Bates said. “Hulett was a huge, powerful team. But, I thought our kids did a good job of staying in their lanes and keeping the action in front of them. We won key battles like turnovers.”

Hulett answered on a 72-yard touchdown romp by Story Penning to tie the game, 7-7. But, LSRV took the lead for good on its next possession as quarterback Zachary Filip threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Rex Stanley. Wille booted the extra point and the Rattlers owned a 15-7 lead.

LSRV added two quick touchdowns as Hulett fumbled on its next two possessions. The Rattlers’ Cole Gourlay returned a fumble to the Red Devils’ 15-yard-line and Filip hit Miles Englebart on a rollout pass in the end zone on the ensuing play. Wille’s kick gave the Rattlers a 23-7 lead.

Moments later, Stanley sacked the Red Devils quarterback, forcing a fumble, and teammate Jacob Ready rambled 40 yards for a touchdown return. The Rattlers increased the lead to 31-7 after one quarter.

Wille opened the second period just as he did in the first period, breaking away for a 60-yard touchdown run. The senior also scored on runs of 26 and 30 yards. Unofficially, Wille finished with 242 yards rushing against Hulett. Filip threw for 157 yards and Gourlay led the LSRV defense with 15 tackles. Ready was credited with eight tackles.

Grayson Lee also had a 37-yard touchdown run for the Rattlers.

The Red Devils didn’t get back to the end zone until there were only 35 seconds left in the game, playing against LSRV’s reserves.

The Rattlers (9-0) next host Kaycee (6-3) in a state semifinal game at noon Friday.

The Rattlers, who are the defending 1A six-man state champions, defeated the Buckaroos, 66-6, in a regular season game three weeks ago.

Kaycee advanced to the semifinals after beating HEM 73-13 at home Friday.
