RIO BLANCO COUNTY — The Rio Blanco County Clerk and Recorder announced Friday that more than 1,200 ballots mailed to voters in Meeker School District RE-1 were accidentally marked “Sample Ballot” on the side of the documents.

Rio Blanco County Clerk Nancy Amick said the error occurred during the printing process.

“We were printing the official run, and then that got interrupted so we could print a few sample ballots for the Secretary of State,” she said. “When we went back, we accidentally set it back to ‘Sample.’”

Amick said about 600 of the district’s 1,828 mail-in ballots were unaffected, but those marked “Sample Ballot” will be counted the just like the rest.

The Clerk and Recorder’s office will mail out postcard notices to update voters.

“We’re hoping to get those in the mail by Monday,” Amick said. “It’s been pretty inconspicuous, so not many people have noticed it, but we want to have full disclosure on this. We’ve been working with the Secretary of State and our attorneys to make sure it goes through smooth. One good thing is it’s a pretty short ballot.”

District voters who are uncomfortable sending in the ballot marked “Sample Ballot” can request a replacement at the County Clerk and Recorder’s office at 555 Main St., Meeker, CO 81641.

A replacement form is also available at www.co.rio-blanco.co.us.
