CMS football finishes season with losses in Steamboat

Craig Middle School football vs. Steamboat Springs:

Eighth-grade team: 33-18L

— Season record: 5-2

Seventh-grade team: 14-12L

— Season record: 5-2

Saturday marked the end of another season of Craig Middle School football.

And, although the seventh-and eighth-grade teams didn’t remain undefeated this fall, the skills they have gained will carry on to next year and beyond.

CMS football ended its season with a pair of losses to Steamboat Springs. The eighth-grade team fell 33-18, while the seventh-graders suffered a slim defeat of 14-12.

“It’s not a great way to end the season, but it is what it is,” eighth-grade coach Todd Hildebrandt said.

Hildebrandt said his boys played strong in their final middle school game, ready to go out on a high note and stomp their Steamboat rivals. The Bulldogs beat the Sailors 22-0 in their first meeting on Sept. 10, but the team they played Saturday was a very different one.

“They really just outplayed us,” Hildebrandt said. “They had a good passing game that weakened our defense, and we had a couple turnovers that hurt us.”

The seventh-grade game was more closely matched, with the only determinative factor being the lack of follow-through on two-point conversions on the Bulldogs’ part.

“I don’t think we got a conversion in either of our games,” Hildebrandt said.

The losses leave both teams with a final season record of 5-2.

Hildebrandt said he believes the end result of the season is something to be proud of because of all the improvements he has seen in eighth- and seventh-grade alike.

“The guys in the eighth-grade class are ready for high school football next year. They’re a tough group and they never quit,” he said. “Seventh-grade is a great crew too, and I think they’ll do well next year.”
