A benefit dinner and auction to assist a Craig resident with medical expenses takes place tonight at the Moffat County Fairgrounds Pavilion.

Brenda Knob was diagnosed with brain tumors in August and underwent surgery to have them removed, but doctors couldn’t get to all of them.

Knob’s daughter, Morgan, said the tumor left behind is located in the part of the brain that controls speech and was later diagnosed as cancerous.

“When we first found out about it, she was having a tough time speaking,” Morgan Knob said. “She knew what she wanted to say, but was having difficulty getting it out.”

Morgan said her mother has been traveling to Grand Junction during the week for the last six weeks for radiation treatment and chemotherapy.

Friday was her last appointment.

“She’s doing a lot better now,” Morgan Knob said. “She’ll have an MRI done in two weeks to see if the radiation treatment was successful in shrinking the tumor.”

David Pressgrove, area director of Bear River Young Life and a close friend of the Knob family, said that although the future looks promising, the Knob family does not have health insurance and can’t afford Brenda’s medical expenses.

“I was approached both by Tim Douglas, who is the pastor at Ridgeview Church of God, and Cheryl Ivy, who is Morgan’s volleyball coach,” Pressgrove said. “We collaborated together beginning in October to see what we could do for the family.”

The result of those collaborations is a benefit dinner and auction from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Moffat County Fairgrounds Pavilion.

Morgan Knob said dinner will feature pulled pork sandwiches, beans, coleslaw, potato chips and a variety of desserts. Items to be auctioned include a number of donated paintings, professional services and possibly a piano.

Morgan Knob is pitching in as well.

“I’m donating four hours of shoveling,” she said.

Cost of the dinner is $10 per person or $30 per family. Children 5 and younger eat free. Tickets are available at the door.

Pressgrove said the response from the community has been positive.

“When people hear the word ‘cancer,’ it hits home,” Pressgrove said. “It’s been encouraging for me to see people from throughout the community want to be a part of the effort.”

Pressgrove said it was important to get involved not simply because of his relationship to the Knob family, but to return the favor to a community that has embraced his organization.

“With Young Life, we are totally funded by and totally dependent on the community,” Pressgrove said. “It’s nice to give back a little bit because we rely so heavily on people supporting what we do.”

Pressgrove said people can still contribute even if they can’t attend tonight’s benefit.
