The baby was welcomed home by sister Courtney, 7, and brother Caden, 5.
- Chelsey Merrill and Michael Higgins, of Craig, announce the birth of their son, Kael Gabriel Higgins, at 2 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Yampa Valley Medical Center in Steamboat Springs. The baby weighed 5 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 inches long. Grandparents are Kristy Neilson, of Craig; Todd Higgins, of Phoenix, Ariz.; Bobbi Sims, of Denver; and Don Merrill, of Craig. The baby was welcomed home by a sibling, Kaiden Higgins.

Maternal grandparents are Cindi and Jim Borden. Paternal grandparents are Dan and Carol Moore. Paternal great-grandmother is Doris Moore. The baby was welcomed home by her sister, Gracie.

- Waste piles up during Craig Clean-Up Days

- Children’s swing sets, lawnmowers, air conditioners and other junk and refuse materials lined the bottoms of trash containers Saturday and Sunday at the north end of Crag City Park. The City of Craig’s Solid Waste Department collected one Dumpster after another of used tires, appliances and other metal objects during the weekend’s Craig Clean-Up Days. The department’s crew filled 11 40-yard roll-off dumpsters with tires and three 20-yard roll-offs with all sorts of large, metal items from dishwashers to swamp coolers.
- MCHS soccer players earn all-conference honors

- Kelly Ciesco led the Moffat County High School girls varsity soccer team in goals scored this season with 10. Ciesco’s goals, while an achievement on their own, also helped the MCHS junior achieve a more prestigious goal she had set earlier in the season. At Saturday’s season-ending banquet, Ciesco received Western Slope League all-conference honors, making her the only Bulldog to be named to the first team.
- MCHS swimmer Matt Hulstine swims to 5th place finish at state meet, relay takes 11th

- Heading into the 4A state swim meet Friday and Saturday, Matt Hulstine said his goal was to break the 1-minute mark in the 100-yard breaststroke. Hulstine took fifth place in the event at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, and while his official time was less than half a second over a minute — 1 minute, .47 seconds — he said he was nothing but pleased with his performance.
- Downed power line causes outages in Craig, Maybell

- A downed power line on the airport road near Loudy-Simpson Park caused outages for more than 1,000 homes and businesses, Yampa Valley Electric Association reported Monday afternoon. The outage occurred at 1:42 p.m., knocking power out for 1,153 homes and businesses in southwest Craig. At about the same time, Maybell experienced a transmission line failure, affecting 276 YVEA customers.

- Yampa Valley Relay for Life is hosting a series of fundraisers at Vallarta’s Mexican Restaurant in Centennial Mall, 1111 W. Victory Way. Every Monday evening through July 11, a team involved in Relay for Life will receive 25 percent of the night’s sales. The Hayden H.E.A.T. team is also hosting a fundraiser dance from 9 p.m. to close Saturday at the Hiway Bar, 136 E. Jefferson St., Hayden.

- My daughter recently married and had a baby. The problem is my son-in-law. I have tried to like him, but it’s hard. He is in the military in another state, and my daughter lives at home in order to finish college. It was his idea to save money by having her live here instead of renting an apartment. When the baby was born, my son-in-law was very affectionate with his child.
