MCTA given approval for 2nd staffer
Kandee Dilldine, chairwoman of the Moffat County Tourism Association Board, said having only one paid staff member has kept the organization from accomplishing as much as it would like at times.
The problem, she said, comes from administrative duties that take time away from the MCTA director.
“That’s what happens a lot of times when you have a director like that, they’re doing more administrative (work) than the director part of it, the marketing part, which is what we want from that position,” Dilldine said.
At its regular meeting Tuesday, the Moffat County Commission approved a personnel requisition for a staff assistant for MCTA.
At the MCTA Board’s regular meeting last week, Dilldine told board members that budget numbers shared at an April workshop on the matter were incorrect.
The board believed it had about $47,000 budgeted for staff. In actuality, there is about $32,000, she said.
Dilldine said the extra money for the new staff member will come from MCTA’s advertising budget, which has been used less this year as the board waits for results from a county marketing survey.
Moffat County Commissioner Tom Gray expressed concern at the board meeting that the hiring would be a step toward MCTA establishing a visitor center.
The board said it was not.
“Our goal is to get the sales director … time to get out of the office, go to Montana, go to California, go do the things that they need to do and have this person to do the administrative stuff,” said Bryce Jacobson, an MCTA Board member and Craig Daily Press publisher.
At Tuesday’s commission meeting, Gray said he feels MCTA is trying to accomplish something with the new assistant position.
“I’m not sure I agree with what they’re wanting to do, but at some point, as long as it’s not completely against sound budgeting or sound spending, I have a feeling that we should let them try what they want to try,” Gray said.
Dilldine said she expects the new position to be beneficial to the organization.
“I think it will relieve some of the duties of the director so that the person … can focus a lot on marketing the county and using (the director’s) skills that way, and not have to focus so much on the administrative things,” she said.
Dilldine said MCTA is currently accepting applications for the organization’s director and assistant positions.
MCTA Director Marilynn Hill announced last month she would be resigning from the position May 19. At last week’s board meeting, she said she would continue to work 15 to 20 hours per week until a replacement is found.
Dilldine said once the applications are given to the board, they will be reviewed and narrowed down to a group of finalists.
The board is seeking to have the new staff hired by the end of June, she said.
