Briefs for May 12, 2011: VNA offering free shingles, Hepatitis, HPV vaccines

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is now offering a variety of vaccinations.

The VNA offers the Zostavax vaccine for shingles. Those 60 or older who are low-income and uninsured (without Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance) may qualify to receive the vaccine at no cost. A $14 administration fee applies. The vaccine is offered through the Merck Patient Vaccine Assistance Program.

The VNA is also offering free Hepatitis A and B vaccinations to adults with risk factors. Risk factors include more than one sex partner in the last six months, recent sexually transmitted diseases, a history of incarceration, use of injected illegal drugs, being born in an endemic country, being American Indian or Alaskan Native, or being a close contact of someone with hepatitis A or B.

Free HPV vaccinations are offered to females ages 19 to 26.

Head Start accepting preschool applications

Craig Head Start Preschool is currently accepting applications for the 2011-12 program year for children ages 3 or 4 before Aug. 31.

Craig Head Start is a part of Qualistar rated program and its lead teacher has a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education.

Sheriff’s scholarship golf tournament set for June 11

The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office will host the 24th annual Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament on June 11 at Yampa Valley Golf Course, 2179 Colorado Highway 394.

The tournament will be a four-person scramble and start at 7:30 a.m.

The entry fee is $40 per person plus greens fees for non-members. Two mulligans per player may be purchased before the start of the tournament.

First, second and third place teams in net and gross divisions will receive pro shop credits. Prizes will also be rewarded for closest to the pin and straightest drives.

All skill levels are welcome.

Proceeds will benefit Moffat County High School graduates.

Variety show scheduled for Friday

The Friday Night Variety Show will take place at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4265.

The event includes local singers and songwriters, poets and storytellers.

Women’s running club to begin Saturday

A new women’s running club in Craig will meet at 8:15 a.m. on Saturdays in the Sunset Elementary School parking lot, 800 W. Seventh St.

The first meeting of the club, Sole Sisters Women’s Running Club, is Saturday.
