Gov. John Hickenlooper has ordered that flags be lowered to half-staff today on all public buildings statewide in honor of Lance Cpl. Christopher Meis, 20, of Bennett.
Meis died March 17, 2011, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
According to Department of Defense reports, Meis was fatally shot when he and his unit came under fire on a mission.
Meis was a machine gunner with Second Battalion, Eighth Marine Regiment, Second Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Meis is survived by his parents and a brother.
Services are scheduled for noon today in Denver.
1980s MCHS reunion being planned
Plans are underway for a 1980s reunion for Moffat County High School graduates. Members of classes 1980 through 1989 are invited to attend.
The event is scheduled for the weekend of July 15. However, specific events and details are yet to be determined.

Craig AARP Chapter No. 1418 will host a candidate forum at 2 p.m. Monday at Sunset Meadows I, 633 Ledford St.

Preserving the Last Frontier meeting set
The Preserving the Last Frontier organization will host its monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the second-floor library at Sunset Meadows I, 633 Ledford St. The program will either be the Dickinson/Sparks family history, or the history of Mills Craig.
