At his recent 20-year high school reunion, he was reminded from his yearbook that he knew he wanted to be a “successful accountant in the business world.” Now the owner of Jones & Associates, Inc., public accounting firm is celebrating the success of being voted best accountant in the Craig Daily Press’ Best of Moffat County contest.

- If you’re a patient under the care of nurse Dave Higgins, it’s a safe bet you’re probably going through a rough patch. Higgins, 48, is the clinical lead in the emergency department at The Memorial Hospital in Craig. He also oversees the hospital’s new infusion clinic for chemotherapy patients. This year, Higgins was named best nurse in Moffat County in the Craig Daily Press’ 2011 Best of Moffat County contest.

- Dr. Dennis Kinder offered a practical explanation on why he was named Moffat County’s best physician. “I’ve been working here for quite a while now, and I have a fair population of patients,” Kinder said. It’s an appropriately modest response from the humble internist. While it may be true that Kinder has grown his list of patients over the years, his response overlooks the compassionate and good-humored care Kinder is known for.

In her three decades of waiting tables, Eileen Kunkle has seen them all and then some, but whether the people she serves are individuals there just for a cup of coffee when the doors open or a big family dinner late at night, she makes sure they never go hungry.

But, those who work behind the bar have to be equally firm and forthcoming, a balancing act Michelle Jones upholds as she mixes and pours drinks, all while providing an attentive ear for customers.

- Tourism organization also hires new office assistant

- The Moffat County Tourism Association is a step closer to naming a new director. At its Wednesday meeting, the MCTA Board settled on two candidates for the open position to replace outgoing director Marilynn Hill. The board will reconvene June 29 to interview both candidates, whose names will not be released until after the interview process.
- City decides placement of new Whittle the Wood sculptures throughout Craig

- Dave Pike, Craig Parks and Recreation director, said the finished works from this year’s Whittle the Wood Rendezvous have been removed from Craig City Park, delivered to new locations, and will be permanently installed within the next few weeks. Typically, the carvings would stay at City Park for a longer duration, but two factors intervened, Pike said. First, the wood used at this year’s event — beetle-kill pine — is prone to cracking. Second, many of this year’s works were delicately carved by artists.

- The Craig Duathlon’s trial run last year to see how it would fit into the well-known Steamboat Springs Running Series seems to have panned out. The local duathlon was added to the Running Series’ 2011 schedule and will take at 8 a.m. Sunday starting at Loudy-Simpson Park, 500 S. Ranney St.

Jefferson Ave., Hayden. The luminarias will be lit during Yampa Valley Relay for Life on July 15 in Craig.
