Craig resident Betty Ann Duzik said she received a great recipe just before Christmas. Over the holidays, she got comments that it was better than Chex Mix.

Betty Ann adapted the recipe for “Crispix Mix” for the oven, but the microwave directions are included in this column, too. First of all, here are the ingredients, which are the same no matter which way you prepare them.

You will need: 1 cup brown sugar, 1 stick butter, 1/4 cup white corn syrup, 12.3-ounce box Crispix cereal, 10-ounce package pretzels, 2 cups peanuts, 2 pounds M&Ms, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 1 teaspoon soda.

Betty Ann adapted the recipe for the oven.

If you choose this way of making the recipe, first melt the sugar, butter and syrup. Stir and cook for about 5 minutes. Add the vanilla and soda.

Pour over the cereal and mix well. Place on a lightly greased cooking sheet. Bake the mix in a 375-degree oven for 5 minutes. Stir once or twice while baking.

Remove from the oven and add the peanuts and pretzels. Cool and add the M&Ms.

Enjoy.

To make it in the microwave, first melt the sugar, butter and syrup. Stir. Microwave 2 minutes. Stir. Add the vanilla and soda and stir.

Put the cereal in a brown paper bag and pour the mixture over the cereal. Shake. Microwave 1 1/2 minutes. Shake. Microwave 1 1/2 minutes. Add peanuts and pretzels. Cool and add the M&Ms.

Betty Ann wrote, “I almost doubled the recipe, but it makes quite a bit so it’s a good thing I didn’t. It lasted really well in an ice cream bucket.”

I haven’t tried the recipe yet because I need to buy some of the ingredients, but I think I’ll use Betty Ann’s oven adaptation because, for one thing, I usually don’t have a brown paper bag on hand.

I’m also going to try and find red, white and pink M&Ms so I can make a Valentine treat.

Next week, this column will feature another special recipe. It’s for bread, and my neighbor Miriam Zimmerman delivered the recipe along with a loaf of warm bread a couple of weeks ago.

It was cold, I had just gotten home from work, and when I finished filling the last cow water tank I went inside and sliced myself a piece of warm bread and put some butter on it.

What a delicious treat after a long day.

Thanks go to Betty Ann Duzik and Miriam Zimmerman.
