Ray Beck and Bryce Jacobson: ‘Great way to give back’

To the editor:

In January 2009, we developed the Citizens Academic Scholarship. This scholarship is a great way for the community to give back to our young adults who are seeking higher education in order to better themselves and land a job that will support them the rest of their lives.

The scholarship has certain requirements that need to be accomplished in order for applicants to qualify.

The graduate has to have graduated from Moffat County High School within the last three years, be a resident of one of the three counties within our local region, a United States citizen, and in good standing within the community.

We were very pleased with the response we had with the 500-word essay based on our nation facing many challenging issues. They were asked to identify one of those issues that was important to them and provide a written opinion about how that would have a positive impact or outcome in this current recession.

Our goal was to fund at least three individuals with $500 depending on the amount that was donated from the community.

As it turned out, we had four successful applicants. Each of these applicants expressed definite goals for a higher education degree.

Because we received enough funding and the needs were evident, we awarded four individuals a scholarship to Colorado Northwestern Community College in Craig.

The following students attended CNCC this fall: Amanda Browning, Jesse Gorley, Theresa Doloksaribu and Chelsea Mead.

We wish these four Citizen Academic Scholarship recipients the very best in their education and career pursuits.

Their academic plans, when completed, will lead them to brighter futures and we congratulate them as they continue their individual course of studies. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to the others who helped fund this academic scholarship, Dr. Joe Petrone and Kenny Wohl.

If you would like to donate to this scholarship and help a graduate fulfill their continued education goals, contact Bryce at 875-1788 or Ray at 824-4994.
