Charles Erick: ‘Shame on you’

To the editor:

The Craig resident Kendall is quite the hunter, eh?

He tracked a black bear to its hibernating den, entered the den, found the black bear asleep and shot it twice from six feet.

Wow? What a great hunter?

First of all, this guy should be ashamed. And on top of that, he actually is unintelligent enough to tell someone about his great hunting excursion. Would you do this and then tell someone about it?

And even got his story published. Mr. Kendall does not understand the fair chase principle, does he?

He shot a sleeping, hibernating bear just so he could having a trophy to brag about.

And you folks glorified it. Shame on you.

Thank you for your time.

Does Mr. Erick mean "fair chase" like hunting Elk from ATVs and using a large caliber magnum cartridge with a high powered scope? Most of the "hunters" from Texas that I have seen are more apt to hit an elk with their ATV as opposed to actually harvesting one. Tracking a bear is not always the easiest of feats. Was it against the law? No. Was it risky? Yes. I would not want to crawl into a bear den regardless of how "asleep" it was. The bear obviously wasn't hibernating that long if he was able to track it. It had to leave the cave recently to leave tracks for Mr. Kendall to follow. Just sayin'.

Hey, at least Mr. Erick had the stones to go into that den after the critter. I wouldn't have ! No doubt that his hunting "ethics" are questioned. I've never had the desire to take a bear, denned up or not. He paid for and recieved his tag. So far as I can tell, there's no rules for taking a bear that has "dened" up.YET. He seemed to be proud enough of his "skill" in stalking taking the bear. I think his problem is that it was put in the paper for all the world to judge. If he would have been one of the areas "good old boys" or the kin of a political figure, nothing would have been said, short of some of the tree huggers and do gooders. We need to put this issue to rest and get back important thiings such as whinning about the dear situation or snow removall. Just 1goodoldboy's thoughts.
