Rig Count for Dec. 24, 2011


A count on oil and natural gas rigs, as of Dec. 22, operating in Colorado, Wyoming and the U.S. overall, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., a Houston-based energy consulting company:

• Colorado has 77 rigs online — three less than Dec. 16, but 13 more than Dec. 23, 2010.

• Wyoming has 56 rigs online — three more than Dec. 16, and 14 more than Dec. 23, 2010.

• The U.S. has 2,008 rigs online — 11 less than Dec.16, but 294 more than Dec. 23, 2010.

Of those rigs:

— 1,949 are working on land, 17 in inland waters, and 42 offshore.

— 1,201 are drilling for oil, 802 for natural gas.

— 213 wells are directional, 1,172 are horizontal, and 623 are vertical.

As of the close of trading Thursday:

• Crude oil closed at $99.53 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

• Colorado southeast crude oil closed at $87 a barrel.

• Colorado Western crude oil closed at $84.08 a barrel.

• Wyoming sweet crude oil closed at $83.53 a barrel.

• The national average price for natural gas closed at $3.11 per 10,000 million British thermal units or MMBtu.
