Joel Clift: Honor Pearl Harbor vets

To the editor:

On Dec. 7, 1941, the U.S. was attacked by the Japanese when they bombed Pearl Harbor. We found it a little disturbing, however, that on Wednesday, Dec. 7, there were some businesses and government buildings that failed to lower their flags in recognition of those who fought and died in that attack.

Like many other families, generations have served their country. Both of my wife’s parents and all of our uncles fought in World War II.

One uncle served in Korea, and my eldest brother served during the Vietnam era. I am a veteran, but never saw combat, and my youngest son who is still on active duty has served in Korea and fought in Iraq.

We appreciate the businesses and individuals who fly our country’s flag, and although they are not required to lower their flags to half-staff, it would be nice if they would abide by the same guidelines as governmental buildings.

Customary dates to fly flags at half-staff are May 15, Peace Officers Memorial Day; the last Monday in May, Memorial Day (Decoration Day) until noon; Sept. 11, Patriot Day; and December 7, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

Thank you.
