Sports Briefs for Dec. 5, 2011: Winter pick-up basketball set at CMS

Craig Parks and Recreation’s winter pick-up basketball is currently taking place at Craig Middle School, 915 Yampa Ave.

The program is open to players ages 15 and older.

Games are semi-organized and take place from 7 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.

Pre-registration is not required and the $2.50 fee can be paid to the gym supervisor at the door or a punch pass can be purchased.

Highlands Ranch player named football POY

The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPNHS, announced Thursday that Joe Hansley of Highlands Ranch High School has been named the 2011-12 Gatorade Colorado Football Player of the Year.

Hansley, who played running back and defensive back for Highlands Ranch, rushed for 1,851 yards and 24 touchdowns on 194 carries this season to help lead the Falcons to the Class 5A state quarterfinals.

The senior also caught 27 passes for 518 yards and eight touchdowns, as well as recording 29 tackles and seven interceptions.

Hansley maintained a 3.37 grade point average and has not decided where he will attend college next fall.

Lifeguard training class registration ends

Craig Parks and Recreation is offering a Red Cross lifeguard training class to anyone interested in being a lifeguard.

The class will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 30 and Jan. 2 to 4 at Moffat County High School, 900 Finley Lane.

Participants must be at least age 15 and be able to pass a pre-course swimming test.

The pre-course swimming test is at 7 p.m. Wednesday at MCHS.

The cost of the course is $100 and the deadline to register is Wednesday. For more information, call 826-2017.
