Occupation: Receptionist at Eyecare Specialties
“I have been working here for six months. I’m the second newbie here. I wear glasses and contacts, so I thought I’d be pretty good here. I was glad when I found out they were hiring here. Everybody here is really nice, and it’s just a good place to work.
“I’m one of the receptionists. We do everything, basically. I was working in leasing at Columbine Apartments before this. I just wanted to do something different. The people here are amazing. It’s really neat working here because you get to do all kinds of different stuff. I can do some of the pre-testing stuff for the patients, and I can do repairs and stuff like that. Since I wear glasses, I think I kind of have a feel for it.
“Before I started working here, I had no idea how much work goes into this. It’s pretty crazy. There’s a big range of people who come in. A lot of older people, but there are even infants. They do eye testing for babies six months old to a year to see if they’re going to have problems and if they can catch it early on because it can affect them later with their learning. I can’t see very far away. My vision’s actually a lot worse than I thought it was. I had an eye exam the other day, and I found I moved up a few notches.
“What I do is explain to the patient what’s going to be happening, get all their insurance information, and it’s like a flow of that all day. I wouldn’t want to do all the stuff the doctors do, but what the clinic techs do is pretty interesting. They do everything up to the actual exams. That would be alright, but I don’t think I’d want to be a doctor.
“When I’m not at work, I just like hanging out with my baby. She’ll be 3 next month. I work full-time, so I try to spend time with her when I can. We’re just going to be staying in town for Christmas this year, I’m going to get a tree soon.
“I actually have never liked Christmas, it’s always been one of my least favorite holidays. I’ve always kind of been like The Grinch, but ever since I had her, it’s really exciting with the whole Santa Claus thing and everything that’s involved with it. Having her really puts the light back into it. Both my grandpas died on Christmas Eve, and my parents got divorced when I was really young so it wasn’t like a really fun family time, but now I can do my own Christmas.
“I just like to have fun, I enjoy life, I like to make people laugh. I could do that at work all day long. I love my job because I can joke around all day. The receptionist is the first person people see and the last person, so you kind of have to have a good personality or they might not want to come back.”
