Governor orders flags lowered today in Colorado

Flags are to be lowered to half-staff today on all public buildings in honor of Army Chief Warrant Officer David R. Carter, Gov. John Hickenlooper has ordered.

Carter, 47, an Aurora native, died Aug. 6 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. Flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset today.

Carter died of injuries sustained when the Chinook helicopter he was piloting was shot down.

He was an instructor pilot and member of the Colorado Army National Guard’s heavy lift helicopter unit.

The unit deployed in May to transport troops and cargo throughout Afghanistan.

Carter is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

A memorial service is scheduled for today in Aurora, followed by burial in Fort Collins.

The governor will attend the services, his staff reported.
