“I manage both the Craig and Steamboat (Springs) offices for Union Wireless. Basically, it’s a sales position but it’s also managing the sales people below me. I have four girls that work for me, two girls here and then I have a girl that works part-time here and part-time in Steamboat and then I have one full-time girl in Steamboat, too.

“I’ve worked for Union for 14 years. They’ve had cell phone coverage in this part of Colorado for almost 20 years now, but I was working with them before (cell phones) became so prominent like they are today. Before I started here, I was working for a company that sold service for Union. They headhunted me and I came to work for them and I’ve always done sales.

“This is an ever-changing industry. It’s constantly changing from the days of the big old bag phones to now when everybody’s got the Internet on their phones. Now we also carry the iPad, so there’s a lot of Internet access. It’s gone from very expensive basic talk to everybody having one with the Internet.

“It’s kind of a give-and-take business. In our positions, we do everything from walk-in sales, troubleshooting, those kinds of things, to being on an operator system. There’s 40 customer care representatives who answer the phones company-wide, so we all take our turns doing that. You may be troubleshooting a landline phone in Saratoga, Wyo., as compared to talking to somebody about cellular service in Jackson Hole, (Wyo.)

“Union is a small, family-owned company out of Wyoming, so that’s a really positive thing for us to know, that we’re selling something that definitely does work here in the area. Honestly, as a carrier, we now carry the iPhone 4, and carry more Android phones than most large carriers like T-Mobile just because of being a small carrier we have avenues we can get other phones from rather than specific distributors.

“I’ve been through a lot of different pronunciations of my name: ‘Raquel,’ ‘Rachel,’ ‘Rochelle.’ Everything like that.

“I spend a lot of time with my family, and I do a lot of quilting when I’m outside the office. I help with my granddaughter who turned 5 last week, I have two adult children and then my parents live here, too. I’m part of the Chamber of Commerce Board and I’m in the Yampa Valley Quilt Guild.

“I started quilting because my mom and my daughter were both quilters. About three years ago, I kind of got into it because they were and now I just love it. I also help my parents because they own a craft store and they travel a lot to different craft shows so I try them with that. My family is definitely the No. 1 thing in my life.

“I was born and raised in Hayden, and I’ve lived here in Craig for 20 years. The reason I moved to Craig was because of the school district. I wanted my son to go to a bigger school. After going to a small school myself, I wanted my kids to go to school here.

“My son’s 24 and my daughter’s 22. My daughter works for Kum & Go in Hayden.

My son goes to college in Greeley right now. He went to (University of Northern Colorado) his freshman year and then he transferred to Aims (Community College), but now he’s going back to UNC in the spring. He loves it there.”
