Veterans Hotline: American Legion, Lions Club partnering to host golf tourney

Ed Wilkinson

American Legion Post 62 and the Craig Lions Club are sponsoring a golf tournament at 10 a.m. Aug. 13 at Yampa Valley Golf Course, 2179 Colorado Highway 394.

The tournament is a shotgun start.

There is a $50 per person entry fee, which includes 18 holes of golf and cart.

The cost for dinner is $15 per person, and the meal includes a Ribeye steak.

There will be cash prizes for first-, second-, and third-place teams. There will also be drawings for prizes, including a new driver and new putter.

Entries close Monday, so be early because the field is limited to 120 entries.

A couple of other notes about the American Legion: membership dues need to be turned in, and the organization will not be hosting a beer garden at the barbecue

Local veterans clinic set to reopen

The Craig Veterans Telehealth Clinic was closed earlier in the week for staff training, but is set to reopen Monday morning.

Office arrangements and coverage

I will be out of the office Aug. 16 for training.

A new program is being implemented to speed up the process of claims and will enable me to access veteran files to stay informed of claims.

I will be back Aug. 17.

I do not know when the program will be implemented in Craig, but hopefully soon.

I would like to see the VFW, AL, Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, and Rotary club partner witht the City and School District to make the Breeze Street Park into a park that would actually get used. A better walk path around the park, maybe a small outdoor stage on the 7th and School street corners, a decent backstop on the 7th and Breeze corner so kids could play baseball, a small shelter on the Breeze stree side with a couple of grills, and new play ground equipment on the School Street side. Cap it off by paving the dirt ally by the apartments on the South side for some off street parking and some better lighting and you would have a park that people would use and the community could be proud of.

Righ now, kids on the West side of Yampa don't have a park they can play at. Younger kids are forced to cross the highway if they want some place to play (City Park) or go all the way up to North Park. I think the community organizations like Lions, VFW and Rotary could raise a ton of money through their organizations and we could call it the Craig Civic Park (Or Craig Lions Park if the Lions Club took the lead and raised a bunch of money. Steamboat has the Rotary Park) and put a big plaque up of all the organizations that contributed to its development.
