Moffat County livestock brands — that’s what you’ll see featured on a Wall of Brands, currently on display in the foyer of the Bureau of Land Management’s Little Snake Field Office in Craig.
The Wall of Brands, featuring about 70 cattle, sheep and horse brands, was set up for the first time Monday. It represents hours of work by members of the Moffat County Cattlewomen.
The wall idea came about after the Cattlewomen brainstormed various fundraising ideas.
Kacey Green, Cattlewomen vice president, remembered a wall at the University of Wyoming Animal Sciences building when she was in school there.
“When people donated money to the scholarship fund, they got to have their brands put on this wall,” Green said. “So, that’s where the concept for our Wall of Brands came from.”
The Moffat County Cattlewomen wanted the wall to be movable so that they weren’t limited to displaying it to one place.
The result is a fabric-covered wall that’s about seven-and-a-half feet long and six-feet tall.
The fabric-covered wall was made in three sections, each of those that “comes down to half,” making it portable. The brands are done on tiles that are attached to the wall with Velcro so that they can easily be removed or rearranged.
After deciding how they wanted to construct the wall, the next step for the Cattlewomen was getting the word out to brand owners, which was a big undertaking.
Green said it was Chris Rhyne who came up with the names of Moffat County brand owners from the 2007 Colorado Brand Book. She made the labels to send out about 400 letters, and the Cattlewomen had a good response.
About 100 tiles were ordered, 70 of which were placed on the Wall of Brands. The other 30 were personal orders for gifts, etc.
The Cattlewomen are still taking orders.
The cost for putting a tile on the wall is $50 for the first brand and $25 for each additional brand. After this year, letters will be sent out to people who have their brands on the wall. The renewal fee for having a brand remain on the wall will be $25.
Green added the tiles can easily be rearranged on the wall to accommodate additional brands, so it’s not too late to have your brand represented on the wall.
Once the orders started coming in for tiles, Green “made up” the brands using her computer.
From there, the brands went to Robert Libbee, of Quality Plus One Hour Photo in Craig, who put them on the tiles.
Libbee said the tiles measure six inches by six inches. They’re of hard board with a glossy finish. The brands and the owners’ names are done in black.
The movable Wall of Brands will be displayed in the BLM office through the month.
Final decisions have not been made for where the wall will be on display after this month, though Green said it may be moved downtown in May so that people can view it during Grand Olde West Days.
The wall will probably be set up at the Moffat County Fair and at a Cattlemen’s Convention in Steamboat Springs.
Money from the Wall of Brands fundraiser will go into a general account to be used for projects such as the annual fourth-grade Ag Day on May 5 and scholarships.
Green said other projects are in the works but haven’t been finalized yet. One idea is to build a bookcase that resembles a barn. The bookcase would be filled with ag-related books and rotated through the county elementary schools and the public library.
Moffat County Cattlewomen President Betty Ann Duzik said the entire organization worked on the Wall of Brands project. Some members even hand-delivered letters to save on postage.

Green reported that some of the letters were returned because of old addresses in the Colorado Brand Book.
