Kathy Bockelman: Good people wanted

To the editor:

Northwest Rocky Mountain Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children has implemented a new program in Craig this past year. CASA is looking for people who are interested in making a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children.

CASA is seeking people interested in being on a Community Development Committee to handle fundraising and public relations, etc.

CASA is also looking for volunteers willing to be paired with children who are going through a difficult time in their lives. Advocates are trained and supervised volunteers, sworn in and appointed by a judge to advocate for abused and neglected children.

Volunteers meet regularly with children they are assigned, and together with professionals, help assess the educational, developmental, medical, and emotional needs of the child. The volunteer is a “child’s voice in court.”

CASA in Craig currently has four committed Community Development Committee members and eight people who have been sworn in as volunteer advocates. We continue to seek more volunteers and committee members.

For most families, home is where we feel safe and sheltered from the world outside. It is a place to share and experience the joy of growing up and growing old with the ones we love.

Unfortunately, there are thousands of children in Colorado who do not have a safe home where they can thrive in loving and familiar surroundings.

Nationwide more than 1,600 children die each year from the effects of child abuse and/or neglect.

As responsible citizens, we must ask if we are doing all we can to make the world a better place for children. Children need a place to call home, whatever that might look like.

In order to have hope for their future, they need an environment that is familiar, safe, warm, and permanent where they can share love with people that they call family.

One abused child is one too many. There are no easy answers for the serious issues of child abuse and neglect.

CASA wants to take this opportunity to raise awareness about issues surrounding child abuse and neglect and engage community members in our ongoing effort to keep children safe.

CASA is sponsoring an open house Sept. 28 for everyone in our community to come and see our new office and meet some of our Community Development Committee members and volunteer advocates.

Please join us, find out what CASA is all about, meet our staff and volunteers, and learn how advocates can change the lives of abused and neglected children in Moffat County. Come find out about how you can play a part and help create positive change in our community. Our open house will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at 439 Breeze St., Suite 204.

As a society, we won’t be given another chance to get it right for this generation of children.
