Andy Bockelman is a member of the Denver Film Critics Society, and his movie reviews appear in Explore Steamboat and the Craig Daily Press.

The Craig Daily Press editorial department recently added two reporters to its team.

Ben McCanna joined the Daily Press on Aug. 24 as the newspaper’s education and health care reporter, replacing Nicole Inglis who is now the arts and entertainment reporter for the Steamboat Pilot & Today.

Andy Bockelman took on the role of interim sports reporter on Saturday, replacing Ben Bulkeley.

Daily Press Editor Joshua Roberts said he’s excited about the newsroom additions.

“We feel Ben and Andy add a good deal of talent to the Daily Press and are capable of doing great work for our readership,” Roberts said. “It’s great to have them here and we’re looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish in their respective beats.”

McCanna, 36, is a north central Pennsylvania native who has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in writing, literature and publishing from Emerson College in Boston. He has 10 years of experience as a book editor and most recently worked as a freelance writer for Down East magazine. This is his first newspaper reporting job.

“I don’t believe you can be a good writer without working a daily beat,” McCanna said.

He said the pace of newspaper deadlines is a change from his previous work.

“When I was working as a book editor, I’d spend a month working on the same project,” McCanna said. “Here, it’s at least two projects every day. It’s exciting.”

McCanna moved to the Yampa Valley in June 2009 when his wife, Jennifer Mora, accepted a family nurse practitioner position with the Craig office of the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association. He lives with his wife and their son, Otis, who will be 3 next month, in Steamboat Springs.

McCanna said working in Craig has been a good fit for him.

“I’ve visited 42 U.S. states and 14 countries and I’ve never seen a place more laidback than Craig,” McCanna said. “Working at the Craig Daily Press creates a fun juxtaposition of rapid-fire, breakneck writing within an easy, breezy, homey town.”

Bockelman, 25, a Craig native, is a 2004 graduate of Moffat County High School and 2009 graduate of the University of Northern Colorado. He earned Bachelors of Arts in theater studies and journalism with an emphasis on news editorial. He has a minor in film studies.

Bockelman has been writing movie reviews for the Daily Press since 2006 and served as a summer intern in 2008. He has been writing freelance articles regularly since January and began Saturday as the Daily Press’ interim sports reporter.

“One thing I like about the newspaper is that the atmosphere is varied,” Bockelman said. “And if there’s one thing in life I enjoy, it’s learning, and the life of a reporter is someone who’s learning every day.”

Bockelman said Craig, despite being his hometown, is consistently surprising to him.

“Even though I’ve lived here all my life, I am constantly finding out new things about it,” he said. “I have known people in this town a long time, but am always finding new things to discover about them.”
