- With temperatures in the mid-80s and clear skies as far as the eye can see — or so the forecasters claim — it’s a wonderful weekend to kick back, relax and enjoy an extra day off in observance of Labor Day. I’ll be on an airplane headed home for a family reunion, but maybe you could make that long overdue trip to the lake, head out to the wilderness for a hike and a camp trip, or just take a nap in the hammock. Oh, man, a hammock sure sounds nice
- Oil and gas company sentenced for bird deaths

- EnCana Oil & Gas Inc., a company based in Denver, pleaded guilty and was sentenced Aug. 26 for two misdemeanor violations regarding the deaths of about 55 federally protected migratory birds in Colorado and Wyoming. The company was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Denver for violating the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the deaths of the birds, including waterfowl and owls, in natural gas well reserve pits and wastewater storage facilities, according to a news release. The court sentenced the company to pay a total of $200,000 in fines and community service payments for the violations, which occurred in the past four years, after reaching a plea agreement, according to the release.

- Steve Herman could see himself in a marathon golf tournament again. If the cause was worthwhile. Herman, along with teammates Dave Peterson and Bob Markham, could be found from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Yampa Valley Golf Course during the third annual Bear River Young Life Golf Tournament.
- Moffat County School Board wary of ballot initiatives

- The Moffat County School Board declared unanimous opposition on Aug. 26 to three ballot initiatives. The three proposed measures, Amendment 60, Amendment 61 and Proposition 101, are aimed at cutting taxes and fees, and eliminating state borrowing. They will appear on the Nov. 2 general election ballot throughout the state. Opponents — which now include the school board — say the initiatives, if passed, could jeopardize Colorado’s per-pupil funding and hinder schools’ ability to purchase big-ticket items, such as computers.
- MCTA mulls making director full-time

- The Moffat County Tourism Association discussed Wednesday the possibility of making its director a full-time position. MCTA Director Marilynn Hill presented the board with the idea at its regular monthly meeting, but she said it was not her idea. Hill said the MCTA board requested in a July meeting to investigate the cost associated with increasing the position to full-time employment. “The purpose of that is to be able to have me do a number of the items that were in the marketing strategy that I can’t currently do because of the limited hours that I have,” Hill said.

- At 6 p.m. Sept. 7, the Colorado Northwestern Community College volleyball team will host Western Wyoming Community College at Moffat County High School, 900 Finley Lane. It will be the only time this fall the CNCC Rangely campus team will play in Craig.

- To the editor: On Aug. 21, the Augusta Wallihan Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated the newly renovated and landscaped gravesite of A.G. and Augusta Wallihan in Lay. This was the first historic preservation project completed by the chapter that was organized in 2009.
