To the editor:
I am writing in support of Referendum 2B, the city lodging tax. I was part of the original group of people who got the current county lodging tax passed about 20 years ago.
As the previous director of the Craig Chamber of Commerce, I realize the importance of passing the city lodging tax. My reasons are many.
The original lodging tax monies helped the Chamber/Visitor Center create national interest in our community, and we must continue to create that interest.
Promoting tourism is expensive. I am so pleased that the City of Craig also sees the importance of tourism and therefore allocated 3 percent to marketing tourism.
That’s more than we currently have for tourism marketing. I’m also pleased to see money specifically allocated for economic development and beautification — they are all extremely important to our healthy future.
In my day, we had only the Chamber to promote tourism, and then with the help of the Colorado Division of Wildlife, we added the Sportsman Information Center. Due to this addition, people now know where Craig is located and we don’t have to add “just 42 miles west of Steamboat.”
Many ideas start out small and grow to become great ideas with great results.
I will definitely vote yes on 2B and hope you will consider a yes vote, too.
