Rod Compton: ‘Leave the deer alone’

To the editor:

I have watched, with great interest, the discussions and debates about the so called “deer problem” in Craig.

As a former Craig City Council member, I realize that the council must try to act in the best interests of the citizens of Craig.

I must simply state that the reason there is a deer problem is the same reason why Craig is the destination of so many hunters every year. Deer live here.

They have always lived here. If we kill deer that come into town, more will come.

Deer are an attraction, not a problem. Any particular animal can cause a problem — that’s the nature of animals — but I quite frankly believe that having deer in my back yard is enjoyable.

I love looking out my window and seeing a beautiful buck or a cute fawn. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water.

Leave the deer alone and deal with problems as they come.

We always have, and we always will.

The only way that the deer will remain outside the city limits is if strict laws, with harsh punishments are passed so property owners must keep the food supply away from the deer. Moving or killing them will be, at best, a short term fix. At worst will have no affect at all, except to waste tax dollars.
