Steve Cattoor: Deer issue needs action

To the editor:

Some people have problems and some don’t with the way the Colorado Division of Wildlife has proposed to reduce the deer population in Craig.

They have looked at various ways and will use the best ways to do this, but only with Craig City Council approval.

I sure hope council members will approve this, and eliminate some of the problems before someone gets hurt or killed.

If the deer count is now 341, in two years it will possibly be double, 682, and in four years double again to 1,364, and so on.

Let’s do this now and not let the population get to these higher numbers.

I am totally for this proposal.

I believe those that want this action to be taken should all sign up for it, and by doing so pledge to pay the full cost of it. I see no reason that everyone should have to pay for something that only a few want.

I concur with als362's post. The poll on this site should be evidence enough that the readers of this online paper do not want this to happen. City council should take said poll into advisement and allow it to play into their decision. I say table it until the April election and let the citizens vote on it. I don't see that happening though. I would be embarrassed, after 42 years of living in Craig(alongside the deer and other wildlife), to say that I am from the town who slaughtered animals that were here long before us. Leave them alone already.

I also agree with als362. The cost to the person wanting this action should be minimal (the bullet doesn't cost that much) and it can be offset when the hide is sold to Craig Hide and Fur. Since the cost is borne by the person wanting the action then the meat belongs to them. This would be a win, win, win situation. Win 1 would be the deer population is reduced. Win 2 People Eating Tasty Animals (PETA) would be happy. And Win 3 My freezer would be full.
