It’s a fun introduction to shooting and fishing for the whole family.
That’s how Mike Swaro, a Colorado Division of Wildlife district wildlife manager, described a sportsmen event scheduled for this weekend.
The DOW, along with partnering agencies, is hosting “Cast ‘n Blast” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at ColoWyo Coal Company and Perch Pond in the Axial Basin.
The Safari Club International and Northwest Colorado Outfitters Chapter are also contributing to the event.
“We will have archery, shotguns, rifles, fly-fishing and bait fishing,” Swaro said. “It’s to get people introduced and let them have fun.”
The event has about 50 pre-registered participants. Registration for the event has been closed.
All of the equipment and lunch will be provided for free.
Fifteen DOW officers will be on hand at the event to help train participants.
Shooting will take place on ColoWyo’s property while the fishing is in Perch Pond, at mile marker 66 on Colorado Highway 13 South.
Perch Pond is home to trout, carp and other types of fish, Swaro said. Families who catch fish may take them home, if they wish.
“Cast ‘n Blast” participants will be different this year as compared to years past.
“We have had youth and women’s Cast ‘n Blasts,” Swaro said, “but this is the first year we have done a family event.”
Swaro is hoping the event will get youth interested in the sports and encourage them to continue to enjoy them.
“Part of the reason for this event is to try and recruit some hunters and fishers,” Swaro said. “Hopefully they will want to do it again down the road.”
