Editorial: Community contributions key

It doesn’t take long to realize the Craig and Moffat County community has an assortment of valuable resources, but none so greater than its volunteers and the service agencies they support.

Volunteers and their non-profit groups, many of which have noble missions of supporting various aspects of the community, are the backbone of our area.

Without them, in fact, there wouldn’t be much of a community, the Editorial Board contends.

However, as always, our local groups could use help in the form of additional support. Many are non-profits, so donations are always welcome.

But, more so than money, our groups could use an influx of new volunteer blood.

Many local residents already serve on several boards, so they’re not exactly the audience the Editorial Board is targeting with this opinion piece.

It’s the residents who aren’t active in the community right now that we’re speaking to.

If you fall into this category, Editorial Board members implore you to take just a slice of your time and/or money and contribute in some manner to the community around you.

No contribution is too small, and no task you could perform is too minor to make a difference. You never know how the seemingly small can spiral into something much grander.

With the number of groups we have in our community, and the causes they have to tackle, there is simply no reason for anyone not to be involved.

A gesture for our veterans

For a small, three-hour window today, our community has a chance to come together to pay respect to our servicemen and women as part of the Hometown Heroes Community Picnic.

That 180 minutes isn’t possibly enough to adequately give thanks to our veterans, but it is meant as a small token conveying our appreciation for the sacrifice they’ve made to protect our American way of life.

The Editorial Board encourages residents to attend today’s event at Craig City Park.

Yes, there will be free food and music, but board members ask you to come for more than just an easy lunch and a breezy time.

We ask that you come for the veterans, so they know their efforts weren’t in vein.

That’s the least a grateful community can — and should — do for the brave men and women who voluntarily put themselves in harm’s way on behalf of others.
