Injuries forced Moffat County coach Harry Tripp to make some adjustments to his lineup before Monday night’s game at Gardner Field, but it was the Sailors offensive attack that left the Bulldogs hurting this time around.

Steamboat rolled to an 8-0 victory.

“We were missing a couple of key players because of injuries,” Tripp said. “We had to shift a few players a little bit, and we were out of position a few times.”

It didn’t take the Sailors offense long to put the Bulldogs in a hole on Steamboat’s home field.

The Sailors jumped out to an early 4-0 first-half lead behind a goal from Kiersten Henry and three from sophomore Sydney Baucknecht.

“It was my first time playing up top this season,” Baucknecht said. “I really liked it. We played really well and kind of connected better up top than we have in previous games.”

Tripp said the early goals left a mark on his young team and took the Bulldogs out of their game pretty early.

The Bulldogs — who were already without senior Lily Torres, who broke her nose, and Ana Maria Flores, who broke her ankle in a game against Palisade last week — could not stop the Sailors offense.

In the second half, Steamboat continued to control the ball and controlled the pace of the game.

More importantly, it limited Moffat County’s opportunities to score.

Henry added another goal on a breakaway early in the second half, and Hope Scott scored from long distance on a one timer.

Skylar Weir pushed Steamboat’s lead to 7-0 when her corner kick curved over the outreached hands of the Bulldogs goalkeeper late in the second half and found the upper corner of the net for the score. Weir also assisted on the final goal of the night. She connected with teammate Haley Brookshire on a corner kick to put the game away.

“Our players possessed the ball very well tonight,” Steamboat assistant Erin Dargis said. “They didn’t just posses in our defensive half, which is where you can become complacent. Our players possessed more in our attacking half, so we had that attacking mentality throughout the whole game — which was a great thing to see.”

Steamboat will start preparing for it’s next game at noon Saturday at home against Eagle Valley. The Bulldogs are headed back to Craig, and will face the 5-0 Battle Mountain Huskies in a 4 p.m. game today.

“We are just going to build on this game,” Tripp said. “This was a good stepping stone for us, and we are just going to take away the little things we did right, and keep building.”
