The ground may be blanketed in fresh, spring snow, but there is no reason not to celebrate the coming of a new season, said Lou Mathews, Steamboat Springs Orchestra executive director.

The Steamboat Springs Orchestra will perform its season finale repertoire tonight in Craig before finishing out its season Sunday in Steamboat Springs.

Starting at 7 p.m. in the Moffat County High School auditorium, 900 Finley Lane, the orchestra will perform two works by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak.

The first, Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B minor, will feature soloist John Sant’Ambrogio on the cello.

In a recent orchestra newsletter, Sant’Ambrogio shared his thoughts on playing the Concerto.

“I am really excited to play this,” he wrote. “It is an honor. This piece has beautiful melodies, is very romantic and touching. It is every cellist’s dream to play it as it is a very prestigious piece.”

The second piece, Symphony No. 9 in E minor, is called the New World Symphony.

Dvorak traveled to the U.S. in 1892 to direct a music conservatory in New York, according to the newsletter.

Dvorak was inspired by the rhythms and tones of “new world” music and incorporates native American, African-American and influences from Czech folk music into his compositions, melding into a sound that critics have said has a “clear American flavor.”

Mathews said she has been thrilled with the collaboration between MCHS and the orchestra, which included a joint holiday concert that took place in December.

She said the Craig community will likely enjoy the music celebration of the end of one season and the beginning of another.

“It’s the whole birth of something new,” she said.
