For Curtis Ellgen, slowing down helped him speed up.

Swimming Friday at the Moffat County High School Invitational, Ellgen was able to lop 37 seconds off his 100-meter backstroke time to finish third in only his second time competing in the event.

“I tried to be really steady, not be too fast or too slow,” he said. “I focused on technique instead of just throwing my arms up.”

The Moffat County High School boys varsity swimming team hosted Glenwood Springs Friday at the MCHS pool.

The Bulldogs won their first home meet, 121-90.

Ellgen, a senior, finished the backstroke with a time of 1:26.05.

“I swam a lot better this time,” he said. “I cut off a lot of time.”

Having competed in the event before helped immensely, Ellgen added.

“Experience is a big part of it,” he said. “The more you swim, the better you feel and understand what you’re supposed to do.”

Ellgen wasn’t the only Bulldog to have a good showing at home.

Chance Peterson claimed first in the 100-meter freestyle and fourth in the 100-meter backstroke.

John Kirk finished first in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly.

Matt Hulstine finished first in the 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter breaststroke.

Charlie Griffiths finished second in the 200- and 100-meter freestyle.

Nick Glispy finished first in diving with a score of 131.45.

Tucker Trujillo finished second in the 100-meter butterfly and 400-meter freestyle.

Aaron Byram finished first in the 50-meter freestyle and second in diving.

“I thought the meet went really well,” he said. “We won most of our races, and I won mine.”

Coach Meghan Francone said the team benefited from paying attention at practice.

“It’s very hard to apply what you’ve learned in practice in a race,” she said. “A lot of times, the boys will go back to their habits, but today they really stepped it up and did what they needed to.”

Moffat County coach Anita Reynolds said she was impressed with her team’s performance.

“I thought it went awesome,” she said. “I’m very, very pleased with the way the kids performed.”
