South Santa Fe Drive in Denver will be renamed Petty Officer Danny Dietz Memorial Highway on Aug. 17 in a ceremony honoring the Navy Seal who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005 in a gun battle with Taliban forces.
Dietz and his unit were ambushed, vastly outnumbered and surrounded by Taliban fighters.
Dietz fought his way to the top of a hill to try to call for assistance. He kept firing at the enemy — even though he had been wounded several times — until he fell mortally wounded.
Dietz (Jan. 26, 1980-June 28, 2005) of Littleton, was posthumously awarded the Navy’s second highest citation for valor, the Navy Cross, on Sept. 13, 2006. He gallantly gave his life for the cause of freedom.

Thank you to KRAI on behalf of veteran
I would like to thank KRAI for the announcement on Swap Shop about a veteran who is on a very limited income and was in need of a washer and dryer.
A kind gentleman from Hayden donated a washer and dryer, and Dave Walters and I picked up the items and delivered them to the veteran.
The kindness and generosity of the people in Northwest Colorado really makes you glad to live here.

Female military teams in Iraq, Afghanistan
In Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. forces are making use of all-female teams to obtain information that male forces are denied.
The Army led the way with all-female teams called Team Lioness, a group of 20 women soldiers who were able to obtain information and search Afhgan women for weapons.
The Army women are now called Chosin Female Engagement Teams. The Marine Corps now has Female Engagement Teams with 46 personnel to reach Afghan women. The females often cover their heads and shoulders with scarves to show respect for Muslim traditions.
World War II Honor Flight planned for May
If you are a World War II veteran, or you know of one, the applications for the Honor Flight this May are available in my office.
The flight is free and the veterans I have talked to said it is well worth it.
Also, if you would like to go as a caregiver, there is a fee, but it is nominal for the trip, food and lodging.
Donations can be made by organizations and individuals to defray the costs of the flight.
