CNCC awards bid for construction project

College to utilize renewable energy

Colorado Northwestern Community College has awarded the bid for its latest project.

The college announced Monday that it will employ Aurora firm Adolfson & Peterson Construction for the construction of a new Craig campus on its parcel of land on Moffat County Road 7.

“We’ve made some excellent progress here,” said Cheryl Slaymaker, CNCC project manager. “It’s a very exciting time, and we’re now in the phase where you can expect to see buildings going up.”

The project includes plans for two new buildings: a career and technical center and a new academic building. Adolfson & Peterson also will be responsible for building the construction site’s infrastructure. The firm was selected out of seven potential bidders with a financial estimate of $15,681,000 for the overall project and an estimated time of completion of 471 days.

CNCC has encouraged Adolfson & Peterson, as well as the other applicants, to employ local subcontractors.

“We’ve had a lot of interest from people in Craig and Steamboat,” Slaymaker said. “At first, we pointed them to each of the companies. Now that we’ve made our selection, we’ll refer them to Adolfson & Peterson. All that should start happening over the next month.”

Slaymaker said once all the contracts are signed, construction will begin April 1, weather-permitting.

“If we keep having weather like we’ve had lately, that will really help,” she said.

CNCC plans to begin a concurrent project in the meantime.

Continuing a project that began at the school’s Rangely campus, Slaymaker said the school will have a geothermal vertical loop put in at the building site. She said the system, a series of wells tapping into heat sources 400 feet underground, needs to be started before Adolfson & Peterson begins its work.

“They’ll have to stay out of each other’s way once they’re both out there,” she said.

The 100-well system will be installed by the Englewood branch of Chevron Energy Solutions. CNCC extended the company’s contract from test wells done in Rangely to complete the project, which Slaymaker said will produce enough renewable energy to power both new buildings.

“It’s a new technology, and it should mean huge savings,” Slaymaker said.

Chevron and CNCC will begin the layout for the system Monday. The estimated project length is 90 days.
