If swimmer Matt Hulstine accumulated any rust between the Moffat County High School swimming season and the Craig Sea Sharks’ meet Sunday in Grand Junction, it didn’t show.
The MCHS sophomore, who qualified for the state meet in May as a freshman, kept up his strong swimming.
Hulstine finished first in both the 100-meter breaststroke and 400-meter medley.
He also had a second-place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke, a third-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly, a fifth in the 200-meter butterfly and a sixth in the 200-meter medley.
That quick work not only paced the meet, it put Hulstine in the state meet, Sea Sharks coach Caitlin Conci said.
“Matt qualified for state in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke,” she said. “He also qualified for Zones, which is a meet that includes teams from every Western state of the U.S. in the 100-meter breaststroke.
“He had placed high in all of his events, including a first-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke against a University of Utah swimmer, and Matt is only 15.”
Other performances included a 29th-place finish for Samantha Beaver in the 50-meter breaststroke; Colby Beckett was second in the 200-meter breaststroke; Christa Bird was 10th in the 100-meter breaststroke; Dylan Chambers was 18th in the 50-meter breaststroke; and Jaci McDiffett was 13th in the 50-meter freestyle.
Also, Kelsey McDiffett was 41st in the 50-meter freestyle, Alexa Neton was 35th in the 50-meter breaststroke, Molly Neton was 33rd in the 50-meter freestyle and Katelyn Peroulis was 12th in the 200-meter backstroke.
The meet included not only Colorado teams, but teams from Wyoming, New Mexico and Alaska, as well.
“In Junction, we had some outstanding performances,” Conci said.
The Sea Sharks will compete this weekend in Aspen, and July 2 and 3 in Delta, before returning home July 9.
