Craig City Council meets tonight
Council to vote on lodging tax measure on first reading

The Craig City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. today in the council chambers of City Hall, 300 W. Fourth St. The council has several items on the agenda including the first reading of the lodging tax ballot question and ordinance. The committee that spent several months developing the lodging tax proposal introduced the measure to the council on July 13. After its introduction, a group of representatives from the lodging industry presented a signed petition opposing the rate of the proposed tax to the council.

Moffat County preparing for state tourney

If Moffat County’s American Legion Post 62 baseball team wants to progress in this week’s state tournament, catcher Brandon Galvan has a checklist the team will need to follow. “We need to talk to each other more,” he said. “We need to play as hard as we can, and we can’t make stupid mistakes and get down on each other.” The team will have one benefit for the tournament that starts at 9 a.m. Thursday — home field advantage.

The Yampa River Junior Golf Classic will tee off at 8 a.m. Tuesday, as more than 50 golfers aged 6 to 17 will hit the greens at Yampa Valley Golf Course. The first tee time will be at 8 a.m. for 13- to 17-year-old golfers. The 13- to 17-year-olds will compete in 18 holes of golf.

Taylor Vernon, a recent Moffat County High School graduate, was recently awarded the WW Livestock Systems dealer’s scholarship of $250 at the Colorado State/Provincial High School Finals Rodeo on June 16 at the Moffat County Fairgrounds.
BLM considers field manager applicants in Moffat County

The Bureau of Land Management is getting closer to naming a replacement field manager for its Little Snake Field Office in Craig. The position was left vacant by the retirement of John Husband at the beginning of the year. Dave Blackstun has served as acting field manager in Husband’s absence. Blackstun said he did not apply for the permanent position because of a conflict of interest.

Sunday included a flurry of activity in our family. We celebrated the 50th wedding anniversary of my sister, Anna Berniece James, and her husband, Roy, at the Luttrell Barn. Joining us was their daughter, Venita Jean Goldstein, of Laramie, Wyo., Krystal and Mike Morris, of Longmont, Lisa Gill Kayle Goldstein, and Jeremy Zmyslo, of Salt Lake City.

Craig Briefs: Kiwanis Club set to host golf tourney

The 16th annual Craig Kiwanis Club Scholarship Golf Tournament is set for an 8 a.m. shotgun start Aug. 7 at Yampa Valley Golf Course. The format is a four-person scramble and is open to anyone who wants to play. The cost is $70 per player for adults and $35 per player for ages 16 and younger.

His fingers gently glide along the thin strings and the melody echoes throughout the valley. The sun is setting while the moon peaks out from behind the mountain range. To the west, the clouds string across the skyline in colors of pink and purple like cotton candy, and to the east the sky is settling into a deep blue tone. In front of me is the most beautiful sight — three cowboys and one guitar making music on the front porch. He may miss a chord or two, but he recovers nicely and it seems like the mishap was planned. If you heard his voice and the chords come together, you would think he had been playing for years.

Brianna Burkett, 9, excitedly displayed a sign Monday in the 700 block of Yampa Avenue, stretching it so vehicles passing by could see. The sign had a simple message: “Lemonade 4 Hannah.” “It’s very sad what happened to Hannah,” Brianna said. “I hope that they can find a cure.”
Carnival, circus coming to Craig this week

From high-rising thrill rides to high-flying trapeze acts, this week offers a variety of family fun. The Fun Zones Amusements Carnival in Craig and the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus in both Craig and Hayden are features of this week. And they are features Christina Oxley said are worth looking forward to. “We’re really excited,” Oxley said. “People say that there’s nothing to do in Craig, and we hope this weekend is one of those times when people feel like there’s more to do than they have time for.”
