- The Craig Softball Association is hosting a benefit softball tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Loudy-Simpson Park, 500 S. Ranney St. Proceeds from the tournament will help cover medical costs for Roman Gutierrez, who last year was hit in the head with a bat while umpiring a game.

- Independent Life Center director Evelyn Tileston wanted to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act being signed into law in a big way. “We wanted to have a celebration that the whole family could come to,” said Tileston, director of the center at 483 Yampa Ave. “We wanted something for everyone to do.”

- In 1967, John Ilko was a new dentist about to work on a career-shaping procedure, he said. He had just been accepted into a rotating dental internship program with the Army in San Antonio. A soldier who had been fighting in Vietnam had been shot by a .50-caliber machine gun and shipped to San Antonio for reconstructive surgery on his lower jaw.

- Mark Dockstader knows that sometimes, what can go wrong on a golf course will. On July 13, he found out that sometimes, by some stroke, those opportunities will swing the other way — the ball will tip into the cup, the putt won’t fall short, the sand trap will be missed altogether. The incoming Moffat County High School senior had a day where little went wrong, and the bounces went his way.

- As the primary election draws near, the campaign activity of Moffat County candidates for public office is increasing. One indicator of candidate activity — fundraising and expenditures — was released by the Secretary of State’s office Tuesday. Candidates’ financial reports indicate how much money they have raised and spent on their campaigns. Reports reflect candidates’ spending and contributions up to July 15.

- St. Michael Catholic Church, 678 School St., hosts vacation Bible school, with the theme Son Harvest County Fair, from 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday through July 30. Monday is silly hat day, Tuesday features a free lunch and Friday will include slip-and-slide fun. The cost is $10 per child or $25 per household.
- Cowboy’s cross-country journey makes stop in Craig

- The 59-year-old cowboy unsaddled his tired horses and unpacked the one set of clothes he brought on his cross-country journey. Phil Dawson, of Idaho, is more than a month into his 7,500-mile trip that is expected to last a year-and-a-half. He came Wednesday to Craig, stopping at the Moffat County Fairgrounds to rest and regroup before continuing his trip. Dawson is making his third pack trip across the U.S. to raise money for America Fundraisers Inc., a non-profit organization that assists families with medical expenses for children who need organ transplants.

The cost is $4 for adults 18 years and older, $3.25 for swimmers from 12- to 17-years-old, swimmers from 4- to 11-years-old can swim for $3 each and swimmers 3 and younger and 55 and over can swim for free. - Free black lung screenings offered

- The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health will offer a series of free, confidential health screenings for surface coal miners in Craig and Meeker next month. The screenings are intended to provide early detection of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, also known as black lung, a serious but preventable occupational lung disease in coal miners caused by breathing respirable coal mine dust.

I know that every visit to Craig will also require at least one trip to the Yampa Valley Golf Course and Tin Cup Grill. This year, we had occasion to play the course with our kids, grandson and some good friends of the kids.

- Dear Annie: When my widowed father required constant care, I tried repeatedly and without success to have him moved to my home, but was rejected by my siblings, as well as by my father, who wanted to stay in his home. I live quite a distance away and was unable to share in his care, although I did visit periodically. The burden fell to my brother and sister, who hired a wonderful person to help. I have had strained relations with my siblings for many years.
