Kip Hafey, Moffat County High School football coach, said player participation in offseason summer workouts is key to team success this season. “We have kids coming at least two out of the four days we workout during the week,” he said. “They are getting stronger, faster and learning the playbook.”

With the August primary approaching, the Moffat County Tea Party is hoping to inform as many voters as it can before they go to the polls, Tea Party member Jeanie Durham said. “We want all the candidates that are running to have the same air time or time with the people,” Durham said. “The people (should) decide. The Tea Party … they do not want to pick the candidate for you.”
Craig phys ed teacher spearheading program to reuse sneakers

Brett Sperl, a longtime physical education teacher at East Elementary School, has a new twist for an old phrase. “If the shoe fits, wear it — and (it’s) yours,” said Sperl, who has spent his 22-year education career at the elementary school at 600 Texas Ave. Sperl’s spin is an apt description of a program that began a few years ago by two elementary school students and one that’s now closing in on a milestone.
Assessor predicting assessed value slump in Moffat County

A projection of Moffat County’s 2010 assessed value indicades county government and other taxing entities could see a dip in tax revenues. A presentation Tuesday from Moffat County Assessor Suzanne Brinks to the Moffat County Commission revealed the county could lose an estimated 7.49 percent of its assessed value from last year. Brinks is estimating the assessed value of the county for 2010 at $471.7 million, which is down from 2009’s $509.9 million. That equals to an estimated $38.1 million decline in value, according to estimates.

I’m happiest at home. Every so often, I test that conviction by camping in the dirt. The knowledge that I prefer a sheeted bed in a room devoid of insects and snakes with a flush toilet readily available grew with my age. I used to love roughing it.

Craig Relay For Life looks to raise $30K

In January, Craig resident Bev Rubley lost her brother, Roger Snyder, after a five-year battle with colon cancer. She will hit the Moffat County High School track in his memory today and Saturday with Team Birthday 365 as part of the Craig Relay for Life. Rubley, a skin cancer survivor, will also be walking the track all night for her 5-year-old niece, who is currently fighting leukemia, she said.

Mountain West Insurance & Financial Services, LLC has acquired Moffat Insurance Agency in Craig as of July 1, according to a news release from Mountain West. Mountain West, a locally owned and operated insurance and financial services company, acquired Moffat Insurance from Johnstown-based PFS Insurance Group, LLC.

The Moffat County Mud Runs are scheduled for Saturday at Wyman Museum, 94350 E. U.S. Highway 40. Vehicle registration runs from 7 to 9 a.m., and races begin at 10 a.m. The cost is $40 per vehicle. There will be eight race classes — four- and six-cylinder, stock, super stock, pro stock, modified, open, and snow machine.
Moffat County High School student competes at Hayden Speedway

Casey Madsen didn’t have a driver’s license, yet she was competing against some of the best racecar drivers in Moffat County. “I’ve been going to the track since I was young with my family,” Madsen said. “When I was old enough, I seized my opportunity.” At 15, Madsen climbed behind the wheel of her No. 18 Ford Mustang 2 at the Hayden Speedway, and went for it, she said.
