For this year’s Craig Sea Sharks ABC Meet, there will be one special guest among the 200 participants.

Olympian Kristy Kowal will be at the meet, and will sign autographs and speak with swimmers Saturday.

Kowal, who won a silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke during the 2000 summer Olympics in Sydney, will speak at other swim meets along the Western Slope.

Craig’s ABC Meet will be her first.

Sea Sharks coach Caitlin Conci said Kowal will speak to her team, as well.

“This is such a great opportunity for our kids,” she said. “I know (Kowal) is going to inspire a lot of our young kids.”

Kowal also won a gold medal in the 4-by-100-meter medley relay during the 1998 World Championships in Perth, Australia.

Kowal was named the NCAA Woman of the Year in 2000.

All of her accomplishments will benefit the Sea Sharks, Conci said.

“I know she is going to talk about her experiences,” she said. “I think that will be good for our kids.”

The meet, which is at the Craig Swimming Complex, 605 Washington St., will have two sessions a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Friday session begins at 9 a.m., while the Saturday and Sunday meets start at 8 a.m.

All afternoon sessions begin at 1 p.m.

The Sea Sharks will have 30 swimmers compete in the meet.

There will be more than 200 total swimmers at the Craig Swimming Complex during the weekend.

The meet will have swimmers from Rangely, Aspen, Gunnison, Ouray, Delta and Steamboat Springs.

Conci said the home meet is something the team looks forward to every year.

“It’s always exciting for us to have a home meet,” she said. “I get to watch some of our swimmers who don’t go to every meet, and see how they do.

“Now that we are almost at the end of our season, I can see how much they have improved and learned this year.”

Notes:

The Swimming Complex will have reduced hours during the meet. The wave pool, which will have admission on a first-come basis, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m., and 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
