Participating Jan. 23 at the district Elks Club hoop shoot contest in Salida, Craig’s Josey King was able to claim first place.
All told, three Craig youths placed in the event.
Josey placed first in the 11- and 12-year-old girls division, while Alexi Goodnow and Tyler Davis both placed third in the 13- and 14-year-old girls and boys divisions, respectively.
Josey will compete Feb. 20 in Salida for regionals, and if she wins she will later travel to Denver for the state crown.
Should Josey place first in Denver, she will have an opportunity to travel to Chicago to compete at the national free-throw contest.
Brad King, Josey’s father, said Josey won her division by four shots.
“She shot against six other kids,” he said. “She had to shoot first, so it was pretty nerve-wracking.”
At the Dec. 12, 2009, hoop shoot in Craig, Josey made 17 of 25 free throws; she made 14 of 25 in Salida.
“At the first one in Craig, she took second overall,” Brad said. “Even to the boys.”
Brad King, who has coached AAU basketball and Craig Parks and Recreation basketball, said Josie has been practicing free throws almost every night as she prepares for the regional contest.
The Elks Club funds the trip.
