This space is sometimes used to criticize the decisions made by our local governments, especially when it comes to their choices on how they use public funds.
But it’s used in equal measures to doll out praise for endeavors that are particularly beneficial to the common good, and today’s editorial falls into that category.
The Moffat County Commission’s approval of a renovation project at the Moffat County Fairgrounds Pavilion, a well-used local building for various events and social gatherings, was a wise one, Editorial Board members contend.
The work, which was recently completed, included new flooring, sheet-rock, paint, electrical re-wiring, new windows, bathroom renovations and installing a sound system and decorative rock around the stage area, among others.
All told, the project has an estimated $130,000 price tag, well below the $185,000 county officials budgeted.
At Saturday’s Diamonds & Spurs event, more than once the Pavilion improvements drew words of praise from those attending, including some from out-of-town visitors.
The Editorial Board couldn’t agree more.
The county’s investment in the building was a wise one, the Editorial Board believes, and it provides the community with a vastly improved, beautiful new facility.
The Pavilion, board members contend, sorely needed an upgrade, particularly given how often the building is used for various activities. And with the improvements now complete, perhaps more people will be inclined to use the facility.
However, there’s follow-up to be done, the Editorial Board believes.
Now that the Pavilion is once again a facility the community can take pride in, board members believe county officials should build a directory of local businesses that can complement events there.
Restaurants that can provide catering, crews that can provide clean-up, companies that can decorate, disc jockeys for entertainment, etc.
A directory of local services could be distributed to those interested in hosting an event there, providing additional benefit to the local economy by keeping local dollars here at home.
Perhaps that’s a point that can be addressed in the future — maybe in one of those opinion pieces that falls into the more critical category — so for now the Editorial Board will leave its message with words of praise.
Job well done, Moffat County.
The money you spent on the Pavilion was worth it.
