Cookies, cupcakes and pies filled tables Friday outside of City Market as Craig resident Karen Sakran embarked on her goal to help a group of people half a world away.
Although she didn’t quite reach her overall objective, she was still pleased with the result.
Sakran and those volunteering with her raised a total of $535.48 in their Friday bake sale in front of the grocery store at 505 W. Victory Way.
The sale’s profits were Sakran’s contribution to philanthropic endeavors to help the people of Haiti after the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that devastated and shook the nation Jan. 12.
“The response was great,” Sakran said. “It was even better than I thought it would be. I really want to thank the people of Craig.”
Sakran and her fellow volunteers began at 9:30 a.m., selling their baked wares until about 1 p.m., when a shift in the weather forced them to pack up.
If not for the weather, Sakran said she likely would have reached her $600 goal.
“People were so generous, and a lot of them gave money without even buying anything,” she said.
Sakran, who in the past raised money for the 9/11 fund, said she wasn’t sure if local residents would be able to relate to tragedy as far away as Haiti.
But she was happy to be wrong.
The money she collected will go toward the American Red Cross and the Adventist Development and Relief Agency in the form of two money orders.
Sakran said she would prefer the funds go to Haitian children and elders.
“I just want it to go wherever they need it,” she said.
Sakran said she would love to volunteer more but said that another bake sale was out of the question after being at an oven for a solid week.
“I don’t ever want to eat or see another sweet,” she said.
Other Haiti donation spots around Craig include City Market, Kmart and Kum & Go convenience stores.
Tracy Shaffer, manager of the east Kum & Go at 700 E. Victory Way, said the company had donated $20,000 to the cause, while stores nationwide had collected $40,000 from customers.
Although donation numbers for her store have been low, Shaffer said some customers have been very generous.
“It’s pretty split,” she said. “Some people just flat-out reject it, but others offer money before we even ask them.”
