Burkie Wynkoop, a former Craig resident, recently was inducted into the Colorado Football Officials Association Hall of Fame.
The Colorado Football Officials board nominates and approves hall inductees based on their contributions, commitment and service to athletes participating in high school football.
Wynkoop, who now resides in Battlement Mesa, worked as an official while living in Craig for 21 years and coached Craig Middle School football for more than 20 years before retiring from the Moffat County School District in 2003.
He also spent eight years officiating in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Wynkoop, according to a news release, said that one of his career highlights was working as an official during the 1985 state championship game between Roaring Fork and Battle Mountain high schools, with Roaring Fork winning, 21-20.
Wynkoop’s other favorite moments in officiating include state playoff games at Cherry Creek, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and Montrose, the release stated.
In a 1994 playoff game in Granby, Wynkoop suffered an on-the-field knee injury, which resulted in major surgery.
After 21 years of officiating, Wynkoop was unable to run, and he retired in 1995.
