Coming off one of their toughest losses, the Moffat County High School girls varsity basketball team could do little wrong Saturday in Delta.

Between a potent offense and stingy defense, the Bulldogs (5-8 overall, 3-1 in the Western Slope League) were able to topple Delta High School, 53-49.

The team was coming off a 39-28 road loss Friday to Palisade.

“We definitely looked better” Saturday night, MCHS coach Craig Mortensen said. “We played as a team, and they just played better fundamental basketball.”

One of the reasons the team was able to bounce back was because of a greater emphasis on team play, Mortensen said.

“I think the entire team did well,” he said. “They controlled the ball (Saturday night), they ran the offense and played solid defense.”

The loss against Palisade was all the motivation his players needed, Mortensen said.

“I think they were embarrassed about (Friday), and wanted to prove they were a better team than that,” Mortensen said. “They came out and played like they are capable of playing.”

The typically long-range oriented Bulldogs were able to boss Delta around in the paint, Mortensen said.

“Everybody did well,” he said. “I thought our post players did a good job of getting inside, and we just looked better all around.”

Sophomore forward Annie Sadvar continued her hot streak, scoring 18 points for Moffat County.

But Sadvar wasn’t the only sophomore who had a big game, as guard Melissa Camilletti scored 13 points.

Lauren Roberts chipped in with 11 points.

Mortensen said he entered junior Justine Hathhorn into the starting lineup to give the Bulldogs a spark.

“I thought she did a nice job bringing the ball up in her first start,” he said. “She had been working hard at the (junior varsity) level, so we brought her up.”
