Moffat County, Hayden, Meeker wrestlers compete at state tournament


The Moffat County High School boys varsity wrestling team began wrestling at 1 p.m. today at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

MCHS wrestlers Charlie Griffiths and Nathan Tomlin won their respective weight classes Thursday night to advance.

Cody Adams and Ben Winslow both fell in the first round, but will have consolation matches later in the day.

Hayden wrestlers advance

Two Hayden High School grapplers have gone undefeated in the first two rounds of the wrestling tournament.

Hayden’s T-Lane Mazzola and Chad Terry have both advanced through their respective weight classes.

Terry, the Tigers’ 119-pound wrestler, defeated Sargent’s Brandon Brown in the first round, then beat Rocky Ford’s Ricky Long.

In his next match, Terry will be paired with Alex Pena (25-2) of Ignacio.

Mazzola defeated David Torres, of Manzanola, in the first round, and then beat Cripple Creek’s Tanner Watkins in the second.

The 103-pound entrant will be matched with Burlington’s Miguel Torres (28-10).

Nick Williams, the Tigers’ 135-pound wrestler, won his first match against Dave McCombs of Wiggins, but fell to Jon Duran, of Antonito.

Williams will next face Paonia’s Cory Rapke in the consolation bracket.

Scott Armbruster, who wrestles in the 125-pound class, fell in the first round to Antonito’s Cody Duran, then fell to Wiggins’ Nathan Schroeder.

Meeker’s Cody Pfau wins match

Meeker High School’s Cody Pfau, one of a handful of girls at the state wrestling tournament, won her first match of the tournament.

Wrestling in the 103-pound class, Pfau was able to pin Julio Maldonado, of Center, in her second match.

Pfau, a freshman, fell in the first round to Rocky Ford’s Ray Rodriguez.

She will next face Cripple Creek’s Tanner Watkins.
