- Just before Christmas, six packages arrived in the hands of Keith Gauthier in Iraq. Six packages were sent to Wacie Laabs in Afghanistan and another six to Alex Clift in Iraq. Each of the 18 boxes was packed full of homemade cookies and elk jerky: a small taste of Craig the three men had left behind to serve in the Armed Forces.

- The greater sage grouse, a bird some consider to be a symbolic and rare bird of the West, soon could be classified as an endangered species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is required to announce its determination by Feb. 26 of whether the sage grouse warrants protection under the Endangered Species Act.

If you happened to be close to Sandrock Elementary School at the same time, you might have heard the delighted shrieks of more than 60 kindergartners watching their balloons bob and sail away.

- Mike Vice, co-owner of Lariat Liquors in Craig, contends that if Colorado legislation passes to allow convenience stores to sell full strength beer, “it will drive liquor stores out of business.” Colorado House Bill 10-1186 seeks to “allow the sale of malt liquor in convenience stores defined as retail businesses of less than 5,000 square feet.”
