The Rifle High School boys varsity basketball team didn’t have an answer Saturday night for Moffat County High School’s one-two post presence.

MCHS forward Angelo Raftopoulos led the Bulldogs with 29 points, 19 of which came in the first half, and teammate Jordan Wilson chipped in with 11, helping pace MCHS to a 67-64 home win.

“I didn’t have that great of a game (on Friday), and I needed to pick it up a bit on the offensive side,” Raftopoulos said.

MCHS coach Steve Maneotis credits the win to getting the ball into the paint early and often.

“At the very beginning of the game we felt like we had the better post players,” he said. “We had the guys who were really going to be the difference maker.”

The Bulldog guards were able to feed the post effectively while limiting turnovers.

“I was just in the right place at the right time,” Raftopoulos said. “I was able to get open, and my teammates found me.”

The Bulldogs led most of the game, and entered the fourth quarter up by 9 points, 54-45.

But Rifle mounted a comeback and came within 2 points with 21 seconds left.

Bears forward Tyrel Lenard missed an open jumper, and the Bulldogs secured the rebound.

The Bears were forced to foul Bulldogs guard Dylon Camilletti, who made the first free throw but missed the second.

A quick outlet pass found Bears guard Ryan Davis on the 3-point line.

A 3-pointer would have sent the game into overtime, but luckily for the Bulldogs, the shot fell short.

“It got a little shaky there in the fourth quarter,” Maneotis said. “But we were able to find a way to win, and that is a sign of growth.”

Camilletti finished with 11 points and scored the Bulldogs only two 3-point shots. Bulldogs guard Zach Raftopoulos scored 8 points including a buzzer beater before the half.

Bears forward Rian Creech led the Bears with 14 points.

With the win, Moffat County improves to 5-16 overall and 3-9 in the 4A Western Slope League.

Rifle drops to 9-11 overall and 5-7 in league play.
