- A jury found Eduardo and David Capote not guilty of third-degree assault Wednesday after a day and a half of deliberations, but jurors could not reach a decision about the more serious charge of second-degree assault against Eduardo Capote. Jurors said the group deadlocked on the final charge, with five jurors saying Eduardo Capote was guilty and seven saying he was not guilty.

- The city of Craig experienced one of its biggest sales tax declines of 2009 in December, according to city figures. Sales taxes in Craig were down 15.59 percent for the month compared against December 2008. That’s the second steepest drop since September 2009’s 16.75 percent decrease.

- The protected strain of Colorado River Cutthroat trout will be getting a new home this summer. The Colorado Division of Wildlife will remove other species of trout in a 1.8-mile section of Willow Creek and replace them with a pure strain of Cutthroat trout.

- To 50-year-old Meg Allen, snowmobiling isn’t just for young, aggressive riders throwing back flips and high marking in the backcountry. She is out to show the snowmobiling community — and the rest of the nation — that the sport is fun, family-friendly and community-oriented. On Saturday at the Wyman Museum’s Winter Festival, Allen will take her place in front of a television camera manned by her husband, Blake, to host an episode of “Sledding the West.”
- 2 new community service officers join Craig police

- In January, there were 105 animal complaints reported to the Craig Police Department. From barking and vicious dogs to skunks and stray cats, it’s the job of the department’s three community service officers to field most of these calls. Jill Nelson, one of two new CSOs who began work Jan. 11, said nothing out of the ordinary has happened on the job so far.

- The Moffat County Ice Arena’s fees may be increasing, which has the Craig Youth Hockey Association concerned. The ice arena currently is operating in the red. Moffat County needed to subsidize the rink by $144,649.41 to cover operating costs for the past six months.
